I bought this product twice for each of my children. The rod is decent enough, and landed a 5lb carp. However the reel brakes easy, and if whoever is using it isn't competent; there will be a lot of tangles. I recommend taking a fair bit of line off the reel before you start fishing as it does tend to just fall off. All in all, it's a decent bit of kit and for what you pay it will do the job!

I bought 2 of these for use on the Norfolk broads when boating over half term. Initial inspection was fine, came with all the accessories, and while small in my hand reminded me of telescopic rods of my youth. Build quality seemed OK, packaged well. Now the BAD. First rod on extending first time seized on 2 of the joints, no manner of oil or force could retract it, so there went the small form factor. Actually trying to get it to retract, so much force in trying broke the rod. Second rod, the reel would not engage in reel in direction, whilst the first rods reel worked correctly I was left with one rod cobbled to working out of two. Bad enough for the cost the working one made out of two stopped working shortly after. 2 days and one garbage bin later. Don't be swayed by the fancy images and features. These were total rubbish. 0 rating if I could!!

I used this on a backpacking trip this weekend. This is a high-quality rod and reel. Action was great, rod stayed fully extended with no issues and was easy to recollapse and stow back in my backpack. It also comes with a protector for the end of the rod (so the more fragile part won't get broken) and a soft black cloth case to store the rod in. Reel attaches and detaches from the rod easily.The reel is also very smooth and functional.

As someone without much of a clue as regards fishing, I agree with the other comments that a 'beginners' rod should have some assembly and basic set-up instructions with it. I thought it might be easy enough to find instructions online but there seem to be different sorts of rig out there and it's tricky to tell what instructions best apply to the kit I have received. I can't really judge the quality of the components but they seem fine to me. There don't seem to be any sinkers (weights) but I'm guessing that the metal 'jig flies' and, maybe, the fish-shaped 'hard lure' should be heavy enough without (I am using the terms shown in the picture in the Amazon entry and in the entry itself). I don't see any kind of load rating for the rod, although the spool of line that comes with it seems to indicate a rating of 7.90 kg. A video I watched talked about using line that would snap at a slightly lower load than the rod (makes sense), so I would hope that the rod is capable of around 8-9 kg but I doubt it, as the rod being used in the video was rated for 3-5 kg and was probably more expensive. In the kit are two 'bobbers' and two 'floats. I'm assuming I should use one or the other but not both. If anyone knows better, please advise. As well as the separate spool of line, there is line already attached to the reel. One end is attached to a little grey clip. Not sure if this is the end I need to detach and thread up through the 'guide rings' or if this end needs to remain attached by this clip (I've not found the other end yet). I've given 4 stars as it seems fine enough apart from the lack of instructions, but then, as you can probably tell, I'm too ignorant to really judge it.
