As a keen fly-fisher, I use a wide and varying range of artificial flies according to the prevailing conditions on the water and what the fish are feeding on. This set of ten flies consists of 2 each of five flies, with bodies of dark red, blue, green, yellow and red. The hooks themselves are well-shaped, sharp and slightly barbed. The 'heads' of the flies are made from a small gold bead, the weight of which puts these definitely in the 'wet' sub-surface class of flies. The quality of the construction of these flies is very good.... (we've all encountered wonderful-looking flies which fall apart almost as soon as they are in the water... ) but these certainly impressed by returning to my fly box looking as good and strong as when they started, with no loose threads or unravelled windings. I used these first in windy conditions on an upland lake, when I needed to get the flies down below the choppy wavelets on the surface. Using an intermediate line, they sunk more slowly than I thought they would, considering the gold bead head. I suspect that used in deep water with a sinking line - from a reservoir boat for example, they would get down to the required depth more quickly. I also tested the flies across a fast-flowing small river using a floating line, where I was able to cast the fly so that it was carried down and tumbled between rocks by the current. This proved to be very effective and I took three trout during the morning, as the fish seemed to snatch at the fly as soon as it went below the surface - just as if they were grabbing a naturally swamped fly. These are large wet flies - but impressively effective used in the right conditions. These are currently marketed at an excellent price-point and well worth trying in appropriate conditions. Recommended.
