I ordered this for my 8-year-old daughter who’s been keen on learning how to fish, and this seemed like a good starting point. The set comes with everything needed—hooks, lures, line, and even a carry bag. It’s all pretty compact and easy to set up, which makes it ideal for kids or anyone new to fishing. The rod itself surprised me—it’s better built and longer than I expected for the price. However, the reel doesn’t feel the most reliable. It works, but I wouldn’t count on it for anything more than casual use. That said, for a beginner’s kit, it should be just fine. There’s a nice variety of baits and hooks included, which should help her try different approaches as she learns. Overall, I’d say it’s a good value starter set for kids who want to give fishing a go.

If you have a child that wants to get into fishing and you simply must get everything you need for under £20 then maybe consider this set, otherwise unfortunately I would advise saving up and getting something just a bit better than this. The rod itself would actually be ok for a young child to sit by the river/pond by for an hour or so, yes it’s a bit cheap-ish but it’s a 6ft rod that would pull out a few small roach etc. The reel I don’t think will last long at all, it just feels very cheap (but I suppose of course that it actually is very cheap!) The bail arm doesn’t flick over when you start reeling. You can switch between left and right handed. If you want to remove the spool you have to turn the button about 300 times and what is underneath almost falls out when you do get the spool off. Ideally you will need to replace the line on the reel as it’s not the best and won’t sit flat/straight on the water. You do get a selection of hooks that appear to be between size 3 and 12 but not sized equivalent to standard UK sizes, so no hooks that appear to be UK size 20 – 16. The hooks are barbed so you may need to but barbless? You get one big float, more like a pike float, no standard floats and/or weights. I imagine this set best suited to a young child sitting with a grandparent on their caravan park, by the pond and just something to keep that young child occupied and actually fishing for themselves. Maybe if you already have plenty of kit you can add to these basics and make something a bit more useable. But please do not purchase this if you want a full kit to get a child fully into fishing, save up and just go for something a little more robust. I think 2 stars is maybe a bit mean for this £20 kit, I think 2.5 stars is where this sits, so in not being mean I will round up to 3 stars
