I haven't used a telescopic rod since trying one some years ago in the USA. In recent years, they have made greater inroads into the UK market and I was delighted to have the chance to test this model from the well-known Shakespeare SALT range. This is the 'Jetty Jouster' model - and the name really does indicate what the intended use of the rod is... a simple, easy fishing tool for casting from piers, jetties and rocks for close-in fishing. The kit comes with a small tackle box containing the most basic items you need to start (but would benefit from a few extra feathers or lures included.....) I added a small pair of pliers and a pair of long-nosed forceps for hook removal from fish - and I was ready to go. The reel and the tackle box fitted easily into a small backpack and I slid the collapsed rod in as well. It proved to be light and easy to carry, which was essential as I intended to scramble down to a safe rock ledge in one of my favourite Cornish coves. After extending the rod and securing the reel, I chose the spoon lure provided in the kit to start fishing - and was surprised by the rod's easy casting action, the smoothness of the graphite reel and the ease of line retrieval through the rod rings. As I suspected, the conditions were screaming for a set of mackerel feathers instead of the spoon - and, luckily, I had a pack with me for this eventuality. A real pity that Shakespeare hadn't included a few in their box. If you want a hassle-free, simple fishing kit that is easy to transport and easy to fish with, this is absolutely ideal. It is great to use for a snatched couple of hour's fishing without having to bother with carrying a case full of long rods and a bulging tackle box. It puts the simple fun back into sea fishing and would be really good to introduce a youngster or beginner to the hobby. With a few extra accessories, plus a few extra feathers or shrimp lures on traces, this will unlock a heap of fishing fun.

This is a replacement. I had to return the first order because scratches and smears as if it's a used item. Nevertheless replacement came the next day surprising, because the first order was estimated to deliver about 2to3 days after purchased, even so It still didn't arrived on time and was delivered a day later. Now the replacement is much, much better except I still managed to find almost an identical scratch on the rod. For what I paid for it @ a discounted price, I think it's value for money @ that reduced price. Pros : *value for £ *Much appreciated accessories * Travel size * seems to be well made Cons : * 1 ball bearing * no carrying bag for rod or reel Overall I think is a OK purchase. I said "OK" because I haven't tested it full yet, I need to take it fishing and see how it holds out. So even though I like this set yet 3 stars rating, well that's because of no bag to protect the rod and reel and 1 ball bearing on reel.

I was hesitant going for a telescopic rod but it was the only option given I'm travelling for the foreseeable. It has been fantastic! The tackle box it comes with is a nice little extra but you will likely need to buy a few extra bits. I've added a number of heavier spinners & soft plastics, as well as swivels with interlock snaps, some heavier braid & mono lines. (All to chase Pollock). Definitely grab yourself some feathers too if chasing Mackerel. I was worried the rod might not be up to landing heavier fish but as you'll see in my photos it has stood up to the task! It casts well & the reel is smooth. The flex is mostly in the end of the rod & this is why I thought it might struggle with the bigger fish but it landed them with ease. If you're after a rod to travel with or a good starter rod for amateurs/children, look no further.

This is a compact telescopic fishing set from Shakespeare. The rod itself extends ro approx 8 foot. There's a reel attached using a typical screw fitting so easy to swap in and out. Telescopic rods are generally quite lightweight but when collapsed are really compact - so really easy for travelling. The set also includes a small tackle box with a mixture of swivels, beads, hooks and spinning lures. Think this would be ideal for a beginner and it seems like decent value to me.

Brilliant little extendable and compact fibreglass fishing rod, graphite reel, line, accessory kit with all your hooks, weights, lures and more, all in their own hard case….. Main fishing rod is extendable, so very compact, great portability, great for throwing in the car last minute, taking out on the river in a canoe, you just pull out slowly each section and give a slight turn to tighten into place, then to dismantle just unscrew in opposite direction. Very lightweight, the graphing reel is so smooth and quite, loaded with a monofilament line, can be used at sea too, resistant to salt water. Bargain little kit for £36.47 on the day of ordering!
